An Eastern Roman Empire carved white marble capital

2nd/3rd century AD
later converted to a font, 63cm.; 25ins high

Following the fall of the Roman Empire many of the buildings fell into disrepair or were dismantled and various components were recycled into other architectural schemes. At some stage this marble capital which would have originally graced a Roman temple has had the centre scooped out into a bowl which would have been used as a Christian baptismal font.

A rare and unusual dated 16th century carved gritstone lion

possibly central European
sejant and regardent with one paw raised on a boar‘s head and dated 1566
89cm.; 35ins high by 108cm.; 42½ins wide
This unusual dated piece carved with a lion on one side, the other side carved with a bird of prey and would probably have originally have formed part of a larger group incorporated into an architectural scheme, viewed in the round.
